INVISALIGN
Align
Technology, Inc., headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, was founded in
March 1997 to develop a new generation of high technology orthodontic
products.
Align Technology's core product, the Invisalign System™, uses cutting-edge 3-D computer graphics technology to design and manufacture customized orthodontic appliances ("aligners"). Developed as an alternative to conventional "wire-and-bracket" orthodontic therapy, the Invisalign™ aligners are virtually undetectable, easy-to-use and comfortable to wear.
The scientific concept behind Align Technology's Invisalign System™ - using a series of customized removable appliances to treat a case from start to finish - first appeared in orthodontic literature in the 1940s. Align Technology leverages state-of-the-art computer technology to make this approach to orthodontic therapy practical for the first time.
Clinical
Studies
The Invisalign System™ is in clinical studies at the
University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and in 26 private
orthodontic practices across the U.S. Align Technology is also conducting
a research project with the orthodontic and engineering departments at Indiana
University, and will soon start a second university-based clinical
study at the University of
Washington. To date, the Invisalign System™ has
been demonstrating effectiveness in mild to moderate crowding and space
closure cases. The system is not designed to treat patients with mixed
dentition and/or growing palates, and therefore is not appropriate for
children.
Align Technology anticipates the range of applicability demonstrated by the Invisalign System™ will continue to expand as a result of ongoing clinical studies.
